BAT*21
Ian Clapp asked
I recently rented the movie BAT*21 on videotape. It showed some excellent flying scenes of the Skymaster in action! I got the impression, however, that the movie producers used a civilian 337 painted to look like an O-2A. Does anyone have any information on the plane used for this film?
Thanks,Ian

Yep... your right... The A/C used in the movie was strictly for show.... The rockets used in the movie were actually were model rockets that you would get at a hobbie store... I forget the model and make but, you could get them... If you notice in the movie that when you see the plane... rocket the troups that when you see it again they are all their... tucked under the wing... The producer and editor made it seem real... The real thing was mounted in tubes... 5 or 7 to be exact. The tubes were borrowed from the Huies... and the ordance was the same 2-1/4 inch rockets. The other thing that they did not have on the plane.... due to the cost and unaviabliity... were the mini guns... I do not know now who has the plane but, Danny Glover did fly some of the movie ... the stunts or wild manuvering was done by Steve. He currently lives down in Bakersfield. If you would like to see a model of the real thing... Testor has a O-2a Skymaster... that is 1:48 scale. Sells here for about $10.00 U.S. It is Testors Kit no. 514. It's instructions are in French, Spanish and english. It does not have the rocket tubes...only shows two on each pod. But, it does show the location UHF equipment... antennas... Hope this answers some of you questions. You can look up the movie, location and producer on the net too...
Night Flyer
wess daniels asked Trivia-- what skymaster was used in HBO/ Steven King's "Night Flyer"?
gmas replied Yes that was the 337 used in the movie night .... I think they used the one up in Washington that is painted black... with red lettering... you never get a good shot of the N number because it was frosted over... for the movie. It belongs to Phil and it is a 1969 337. Their were actually 3 different ones use... one in the studio another at the airfield and another model from bryan which was kept in a studio hangar for close up work... There are currently two other movies that are using the mixmaster from various people... being made here in california and several other states. Not to worry about the ones that get wrecked... they come from a wreaking yard that supplies them to the movies. It is located out at El Marage dry lake... don't call and ask for parts... the owner is not selling... He only is in business for the movie sets... As yet no one has made a documentary about the airplane and its roll that it played in the VN war. It seems the wings program and the historical libray at the University of Utah... have not made any ... could be a undetaking that we all would like to see... G.M>
